Mesa Arch, Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Canyonlands National Park was established in 1964 and comprises 527 square miles. Edward Abbey worked as a park ranger here and did not want to share it. The park is divided into four regions: Island in the Sky, the Maze, and the Green and Colorado Rivers.

The Island in the Sky is the home of Mesa Arch, pictured above. It is a cliff-wall arch. It was formed at an exposed cliff face where softer rock eroded above and below creating an arch.

The delicate formations seen through the arch are called Washer Woman and Monster Tower. The arch overlooks Buck Canyon carved by the Colorado River. This image was captured using a 6X9 Arca Swiss View Camera on Fuji Velvia film and can be printed at a larger size of 36x54 in.  Contact the photographer for more info.
